L’esperluette is how you say ampersand in French.
This is kind of an overgrown monster of an ampersand. It is kind of beautiful and ugly and interesting in the way a kudzu-choked tree is. Or maybe it actually reminds me of those mutant pesticide frogs with the extra legs. Anyways, it kind of defies the “ampersands I like” and “ampersands I dislike” categories I set up.
There is also a special bonus ampersand from some sort of banner also in front of the store. I am pretty sure it was lottery-related.
For those interested, this was found in the tenderloinon Larkin street.
Here is a nice ampersand from the ITC American Typewriter and ampersand loving Kramer’s Books & Afterwards. Careful, annoying music starts playing on their site as soon as you click. Oh and why not visit Jerimiah’s site. He took these pics.
After seeing my earlier post, Eileen sent in her ampersand tattoo:

Some people care so deeply about ampersands, they have them permanently drawn on their skin.
Flickr user letsread wrote me this:
it’s ITC caslon 540 italic from the book figgs & phantoms by ellen raskin–which incorrectly identifies the ampersand as garamond
Also she has a blog.
Janet also sent me hers:
my friend just directed me to your blog – i love it! i have an ampersand tattoo. it’s a direct copy of the ampersand on the cover of the book “& Fork” published by phaidon. it’s an ampersand that was designed specifically for that cover, and it’s gorgeous
I think both of these are pretty great. In fact, they remind me of one of my favorite ampersands.

Hey, love your blog, maybe you’ll get a kick out of this “ampersad”
i think hes upset because nobody knows how to draw him, so “+” gets all the action.
His site, NEON GRAY has some pretty cool stuff. I like this nice .gif demonstration as well.
An onion ring that almost kind of resembles an ampersand.
From Eli the Bearded’s photo in the Ampersandland photo pool.
I love this but I might like this better.
